Muay Thai is Thailand's most popular martial art. Students from all over the world come to Thailand each year to learn the sport right from the source. In Phuket, there are numerous gyms that offer training in Muay Thai, and many of them offer month-long training programs for travellers. Training in these gyms gives you a chance to really get in shape and improve your skills with an intense course. Here's a look at a few of our favourites and how to make the most of your Muay Thai experience.

AKA Thailand

The Thailand gym is quite expansive, offering training not just in Muay Thai, but in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, mixed martial arts and general fitness conditioning. Novices and experienced fighters alike will enjoy taking advantage of the state-of-the-art facilities and equipment in their quest to improve their martial arts skills.

Training Tips

When you attend a Muay Thai training camp, you'll be pushed to your physical limits as you train, so it helps to have a solid foundation of general fitness. Aim to step up your fitness efforts a bit in the weeks and months leading up to your Muay Thai holiday to ensure your body is prepared for the rigours of the training program.

Throughout the training, always listen to your body and let the instructors know whenever you need a break. Although you do want to push yourself to improve your skills, you don't want to push so hard that you injure yourself, ruining the rest of your holiday.

It is important to note that it can get quite humid in Thailand. Those who aren't used to this type of climate may be at greater risk for dehydration. Drink plenty of water throughout your stay, particularly when you are training hard. Your body will acclimate to the humidity after a week or so.
